Training

The difference between training someone and briefing them is the level to which information is understood, and able to be applied in the future.  If an activity is worth training for, it must be trained for correctly.  The Densus Group approach to training is through the use of formalised training development techniques, to ensure that the training conducted is both effective and enduring.

Training is an essential pillar to building a capable and effective use of force regime.  Training may be conducted on behalf of a client either as a bespoke activity, or as part of a wider provision such as capability development.

All training stems from an assessment of the client’s desired effect; the team works with the client to establish what the client wants to achieve and the factors affecting the environment.  Training objectives and priorities are agreed, and the team committed to creating the appropriate methods, within the resource constraints that apply.

Example of Training - Operations in Built Up Areas

An Eastern European state that was developing its military capability required a training course for key operational personnel in Operations in Built-Up Areas. Together with the military leadership members created a training course that addressed both the core need and additional benefits, including reports on potential for promotion. A three day reconnaissance was followed four months later by a two week course, conducted by experienced professionals in urban warfare, that delivered the training.

Counter-insurgency Training Example

An African Defence Force required training for specific personnel in Counter-Insurgency techniques.  We worked with them to understand the threat (low), and the motivations behind the training need, and developed a focused training cycle that precisely met the agreed upon criteria – that the class would be able to quickly generate a long-term capability once a threshold situation existed.  This was duly delivered by seasoned professionals in counter-insurgency operations, and well received.
